Harambee Stars...a need for stability...

As the dust settles on Harambee Stars qualification for the final round of the African Nations Cup/ World Cup 2010 qualifiers, we need to ask ourselves this question,"where do we go from here?" Are the Stars going to face more upheaval with Francis Kimanzi's tenure as head coach uncertain or will they be accorded all the support and stability required to bring out more sterling performances?

The draw for the final round of qualifying takes place on Wednesday 22nd October 2008 in Zurich where Kenya gets to know here opponents for the final round. What plans does the KFF or the people handling the Stars have in store? To the best of my knowledge there are several FIFA sanctioned dates for friendlies between October and March 2009 when the qualifiers kick off. It would be ideal for the KFF to organize several fixtures both home and away in readiness for the task at hand. Let them not wait for the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup, it is upon the KFF to take the initiative to keep the Stars' busy in the interim. It is amazing how the Stars' qualified for the final round having played only ONE build match against Malawi while other federations took advantage of the FIFA sanctioned dates tokeep their representative sides busy.

It is imperative that the team stays together, and stays active so as to improve the team's general performance. It is worth noting that Dennis Oliech bagged five of Kenya's eight goals during the first stage of qualifying. This is simplistic thinking but don't you think that having the team play more matches together will bring out more goal scorers as well as more talent in all departments. Keeping the team busy would also help identify areas requiring corrective action. It is important to note that in the recent loss to Guinea, Kenya conceded two goals from setpiece situations.

The recent fixture in Guinea exposed Kenya's weaknesses in playing away from home, the team was subdued for large spells of the game,threatening but lacking lacking confidence though their fightback with eight minutes left spoke volumes. I hold the view that if, in the forthcoming period,if the KFF were able to keep the team together and get them to play fixtures away from home in hostile environments, we could be in serious contention for a berth at the Cup of Nations in Angola and it would be realistic to dream about playing in the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa.Just look at Nakuru RFC's steady rise to prominence, they have been together for close to three years and are slowing staking a claim as one of the teams to beat on the Kenya club rugby scene.If a community based club from Nakuru has reaped the benefits of growing a team, why can't the KFF? This,in my opinion is the first step towards making Kenya an African footballing powerhouse.

Gallant Stars fall to Guinea but still qualify for final round of qualifiers

Trailing 0-3 with 8 minutes left on the ticker at the September 28 Stadium in Conakry, Guinea, sensational striker Dennis Oliech proved to be the menace we all know him to be when he struck a double as Kenya eventually went down 2-3 to the hosts.

Ismael Bangoura kept up his prolific goal scoring record for Guinea with a first-half goal set up by Fode Mansare.

Two more goals from defender Mamadou Bah and Kamil Zayatte after the hour mark increased Guinea’s lead but Kenya fought back with two goals from French-based striker Dennis Oliech in the last eight minutes.

Oliech first scored at the near post from a Kevin Ochieng cross, silencing the home team who had begun showboating, assured of the three points and qualification to the final round of qualifying. If his first goal was classy, the second was sheer brilliance. Oliech picked up a loose ball deep in the Guinea half, skipped past five players before blasting the ball past a stranded Naby Yattara in the Guinea goal.

The win enabled Guinea top Group Two with 11 points and Kenya, who were on top going into the match, finished second but well within the points bracket to seal passage to the next round as one of the best second-placed eight teams.
Harambee Stars looked vulnerable from set pieces and attacks from the flanks but overall this was one of their best performances away from home in many years. Maybe more high profile matches away from home will give them that extra edge in away fixtures. The KFF should also retain the technical bench and keep the team together.Just a thought.

The draw for the final round of qualifying takes place on 22nd October in Zurich. The 2010 World Cup dream remains alive for the Stars.

Stars too bright for the Brave Warriors

Harambee Stars beat Namibia's Brave Warriors 1-0 ending a twelve year losing streak against the Brave Warriors at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Saturday. The win before a near capacity stadium, also put Stars at the top of Group Two in the World Cup/Africa Cup Nations qualifier on 10 points.

Guinea, who until Saturday were the group leaders with seven points, play Zimbabwe Sunday in another Group Two match.

The recalled Jamal "Malo Malo" Mohammed slotted home a 44th minute penalty awarded after Collin Benjamin hacked down John Njoroge to send the home fans into celebration.

The goal was a relief to thousands of fans who turned up to watch the game but were getting impatient with the blunt attack. The absence of suspended AJ Auxerre striker Dennis Oliech was clearly felt upfront with Stars lacking a hitman.
Mulinge Munandi, coming back to the team after a two year absence, made his presence felt in the fourth minute when he sent an inviting cross towards the Namibia goal, but Patrick Oboya, Macdonald Mariga and Allan Wanga were too late to tap the ball home.

FK Siad Most midfielder Patrick Oboya, who also came back to the team after a one match suspension, excited the fans with his deft footwork in the early exchanges of the game. In the sixth minute, captain Robert Mambo failed to score from a Njoroge cross.

Six minutes later, there was a scramble at the Namibian goal with both Wanga and Mambo failing to tap home the ball.

Paulus Shipanga’s dangerous free kick on the edge of Kenya’s goal was cleared by Munandi as the match crawled to the quarter hour mark. Three minutes later, the Brave Warriors forced a corner kick. On the other side of the pitch, Attel Mbaha in Namibia’s goal stretched to stop Mohammed in what should have been Stars’ opening goal.

The Kenyan attack was unrelenting with Wanga again nearly beating Mbaha in goal. Mohammed shot wide from the edge of Namibia’s goal as Benjamin, who turns out for German Bundesliga side Hamburg, had a weak shot at goal on the stroke of half time.

Kimanzi says Stars must beat Namibia

Harambee Stars coach Francis Kimanzi has declared their clash against Namibia on Saturday as "a must win tie" saying they will not depend on the results between Zimbabwe and Guinea.

"We want to put our destiny in our own hands. And to do so, we must beat the Namibians on Saturday," Kimanzi said. "I know they have a new coach, which means they have a new way of thinking. That alone should make the clash difficult, but there are no two ways about it. We cannot afford to lose," he added.

Germinal Beerschot striker Victor Mugabe is unavailable for this weekend’s 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Namibia.

Mugabe was ruled out after he failed to link up with the rest of the squad at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Harambee Stars head coach, Francis Kimanzi, revealed the player could not come to Nairobi following complications in his travel documents.

"Mugabe is not coming for the match although we had hoped to try him out. It is not a big blow to us since we have not used him in this campaign," said Kimanzi.

In the absence of Mugabe, Kimanzi has called up Mahakama striker, Francis Chinjili.

Contacted, Mugabe’s father, Noah Wanyama, said his son’s manager refused to release him for fear that he would not go back.

"There were fears that he may not return to Belgium and so his agents held on to him. He will be available for the Guinea match," said Wanyama.

Wanyama said having just signed a new contract with the Belgium club, the agents are keen that he plays his first match for the team in the next two weeks.

The Stars’ coach also downplayed the absence of AJ Auxerre striker, Dennis Oliech, who is suspended after picking two yellow cards during Guinea and Zimbabwe matches.

"We don’t focus on individuals but on the team as a whole. In the past, we have to do without key players," he said in reference to McDonald Mariga and Patrick Oboya, who missed the June 21 return match against Zimbabwe in Harare.

With three days before the match, Kimanzi has intensified his training, focussing on different departments of the team in training.

In the last two days, the team has had at least nine sessions starting at 6.30a.m. The sessions focus on the goalkeeping, defence, midfield and striking force separately with one session bringing together the whole team in the evening.

Kimanzi is equally excited about playing at Kasarani on Saturday saying it favours his side.

"When we played our first match in Namibia the stadium was smaller, but this time we want to double everything for them. The stadium is bigger with more fans and will give us space to play while being a disadvantage to our opponents who may not be used to such," he added.

Team captain Robert Mambo joined the team Tuesday morning as the camp registered a full house for the first time.

He came in a few hours after other foreign-based players, Mariga (Parma, Italy), George Owino (Yanga, Tanzania), Allan Wanga (Petro Atletico, Angola), Jamal Mohammed (Enkorrping, SK, Sweden) and Patrick Oboya (FK Siad Most, Czech).

Namibia coach says his team is under no pressure

New look Namibia squad to face Kenya named

The 18 man Namibian squad to face Kenya this coming Saturday has been named.

New coach of the Brave Warriors Tom Saintfiet released the list on Sunday discarding a huge chunk of the initial 33 man list largely made up of local based players.

Saintfiet himself is one of the several changes in the squad having replaced fired Arie Schans, the coach who led the Brave Warriors over Kenya in Nairobi.

The final squad includes close to 10 South African based players as well as German based duo of Collin Benjamin and Wilko Risser who play for Hamburg Sv and Eintracht Fc respectively.

Oliver Risser who scored the first goal against Kenya in the first qualifier in Windhoek on May 31st is in the squad. With Risser, Attiel Mbaha, Richard Gariseb, Quinton Jacobs and Lazarus Kaimbi are the only five survivors of the triumphant squad over Kenya.

Coach Saintfiet has however left out Costa Kaiseb the man who scored an 89th minute goal that sunk and embarrassed Kenya in that game that ended 2-1. Jeremiah Baisako, Hartman Toromba, Maleagi Ngarizemo, Michael Piennar and Brian Brendell who were part of the winning squad as well as subs Efraim Tjihonge, Tuegela Tuyeni, Jacob Pineas and Rudolph Bester will also not be visiting Nairobi when the Namibian team jets in today.

Since beating Kenya, Namibia has gone three games without a win after loosing the next three games to Zimbabwe (twice) and to Guinea.

On the other hand, Kenya has neither lost nor conceded a goal since jetting out of Windhoek. Kenya beat both Guinea and Zimbabwe with identical 2-0 wins and drew 0-0 with Zimbabwe in the last game. Kenya is second in Group 2 tied with Guinea on seven points while Namibia is rock bottom at fourth with three points. Zimbabwe are third on five points.

Stars in camp for Namibia clash

Jamal Mohamed, an exciting midfielder with Swedish club Enskoping is one of the inclusions in a 25-man squad Kenya announced to prepare for their September 6 2010 World Cup/African Nations Cup qualifying match with Namibia in Nairobi.

Mohamed last played for Kenya in December 2007, during the East and Central Africa Challenge Cup in Tanzania. Then, he was with Ghanaian club, Liberty Professionals. When the cup qualifiers started this year, new Kenya coach Francis Kimanzi did not pick Mohamed because he [the coach] said he had no idea in which country or club the player was.

The Kenya Football Federation (KFF) secretary general Sammy Obingo on Wednesday announced the squad and the Kenyan Premier League (KPL), who have been temporarily managing the Harambee Stars jointly with the KFF said the squad would report on August 25 at the training camp at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

KPL�s Technical Officer, Frank Okoth, also indicated that the crucial qualifying match will be at the Moi International Sports Centre on September 6, and apparently not at Nyayo National Stadium as previously widely believed.

Domestic club players will be released to play for their respective sides in KPL League matches on the weekend of August 30 and 31, Okoth said.

Goalkeeper Arnold Origi who was injured in Kenya�s 2-0 defeat of Zimbabwe in Nairobi during the June qualifying series is out of the squad together with Kenya�s best forward Dennis Oliech who will miss the September match through suspension. Oliech took his second yellow card in the 0-0 draw in Kenya�s last match with Zimbabwe in Harare.

Young Victor Mugabe, brother of midfielder MacDonald Mariga, has earned a call-up. Mugabe joined Belgian club Germina Beerschot as soon as he was identified as prospective key member of the national team but was unavailable thereafter.

Notable omissions is Moses Odhiambo of Rwanda club APR and Boniface Ambani the striker with Tanzania champions Young Africans.

A complete new call-up is Evans Amoka of Ulinzi Stars while Mulinge Munandi, the ex-Tusker defender now at Ulinzi, who last played for the Harambee Stars in the 2006 African Nations Cup qualifiers is back.

Stars return to FIFA top 100

The latest Fifa football rankings will make very happy reading to Kenyans because their national team Harambee Stars are one of the most improved sides in the world.

After their recent success in the 2010 World Cup/African Nations Cup qualifiers, Kenya moved up an unprecedented 23 places and now stand as the 92nd best team in the world and 24th in Africa.

From recently one of the weakest Confederation of East and Central Africa Football Associations teams, Harambee Stars have climbed up the ladder to almost the top of the Cecafa region. Only Rwanda, at No.21 in Africa, are ranked ahead of Kenya.

The rest of the Cecafa nations come behind Kenya in the order of; Uganda (26), Ethiopia (30), Sudan (32), Tanzania (34), Burundi (39) and Eritrea (42), all of who were performing better than Kenya in continental and Cecafa football in as recently as just over six months ago. Djibouti at 49th and Somalia at 51st are the other teams in the region.

Burkina Faso, Swaziland and Cape Verde are the only African countries that made bigger leaps than Kenya in the latest rankings. Burkina Faso flew a massive 47 places to perch at the 64th team in the world and 12th in Africa, while Swaziland moved 38 places to 123rd in the world and 35th in Africa. Cape Verde moved 24 places to 85th in the world and 20th in Africa.

Kenya's marked improvement comes off recent 2-0 victories each over Guinea (7th in Africa, 39th in the world) and Zimbabwe (18th in Africa and 82nd in the world) and a 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe. Kenya play Namibia in Nairobi in September and Guinea in Conakry in October to conclude the first round of the 2010 World Cup/Nations Cup qualifiers.

Victories for Harambee Stars would put them in even a better position for the seeding of the second round of the qualifiers. The second round will be of five pools headed by the five top ranked teams in the continent. Currently they are; Cameroon (13th in world), Ghana (20), Egypt (24), Nigeria (26), Cote d'Ivoire (28).

Newly-crowned European champions Spain became the sixth nation to have ever occupied the No.1 Fifa rankings position. They jumped three places to head the table on which they are followed by Italy, Germany, Brazil, The Netherlands, Argentina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Portugal and France who complete the top 10.

Cameroon (13th in the world) the top African team are notably better than Euro semi-finalists Turkey (14), former world champions England (15) and Uruguay (22) and former European champions Greece (18) and Denmark (36).

Chinjili returns to Harambee Squad for Malawi tour

Striker Francis Chinjili has found his way back to the Kenya national soccer team and is in the party for this week's friendly tour to Malawi.

The much-travelled player is back at his Kenya Premier League club Mahakama which he had left to seek professional status in Oman. Before that Chinjili was recognised for his stint at Ethiopian giants St George's.

On Tuesday evening Chinjili was a starter in Mahakama's KPL midweek clash with one of the leading league sides, World Hope, at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The Kenya Football Federation (KFF) chief executive officer, Sammy Obingo released the 18-man squad for the Malawi tour which he said had been picked by coach Francis Kimanzi and his assistants.

But curiously, on Monday afternoon Kimanzi had said the KFF had not informed anything about the tour and at that time was unsure about any arrangements."I have no information whatsoever. Ask Sammy Obingo at KFF," the Harambee Stars coach had responded to inquiries.

The change of situation must have led to Kimanzi's quick action to put together a side. Apart from Chinjili, Kimanzi brings in KPL debutants Western Stima's first international this season; Augustine Etemesi, a scorer who has helped Stima to maintain a mid-table position. Another fresh cal-up is Joseph Njuguna, a KCB forward.

There is a return to the squad of Bandari midfielder Anthony Dafaa, for the first time after he played in last December's East and Central Africa Challenge Cup in Tanzania.

Kimanzi will have the services all Harambee Stars players based in the Middle East who took part in the team's recent 2010 World Cup/African Nations qualifying matches. Edgar Ochieng', Kevin Ochieng' and Monday Osborne are available and will go to Malawi. The rest of Kenya's foreign-based players are out. Kimanzi will have a perfect opportunity to build confidence in more home-based players by according them international experience.

Kenya's remaining two matches in the 2010 qualifiers are against Namibia in Nairobi in September and away to Guinea in October. Currently the second-placed Group Two team Kenya stands a good chance of entering next year's deciding round.

Harambee Stars have time to regroup for final strike at qualification

Harambee Stars arrived back home in Nairobi on Monday evening following their well received 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe on the artifical turf of Harare's Rufaro Stadium on Sunday.

The 2010 World Cup/African Nations Cup qualifiers first round return leg brought out the adventurous trait of young Kenya coach, Francis Kimanzi who when faced with withdrawals due to injury and suspension showed a steely resolve that saw him make some radical selection choices and survive in the crucial away match.

A point to add to the Kenyans' 2-0 defeat of Zimbabwe in Nairobi on June 14 puts the Harambee Stars in good stead to enter the final round of the African zone qualifiers.

Kimanzi, the 32-year-old first-time Harambee Stars coach showed his bold side when he drastically changed his defence after an opening 1-2 loss to Namibia in Windhoek, dropping regular fullback Ibrahim Shikanda and replacing him with rookie Anthony Kimani,a bold step considering the calibre of the star Guinea forwards Pascal Feindouno and Ishmael Bangoura. After a 2-0 win the coach kept faith with the starting XI, parading them against Zimbabwe in the following match and he got another resounding 2-0 win.

However, this battle proved to expensive, goalie Arnold Origi and midfielder McDonald Mariga missed the Harare encounter through injury. Czech based forward Patrick Oboya received a second yellow card that also saw him miss the Harare tour. Kimanzi was forced to make more radical changes, giving a late recall to Andrew Oyombe, who incidentally is Dennis Oliech's elder brother and starting with Kevin Ochieng' and Francis Ouma. Goalie Noah Ayuko got his first cap.

Kimanzi demonstrated he was doing nobody other than the team any favours. The coach realised he had taken a bit of a gamble for the not-very-fully-match-ready Oyombe. Kimanzi did not leave Oyombe on much further than a few minutes after the first 45 replacing him with Osborne Monday.

The coach's tactics also clearly showed a massive reshuffle. The ferocious pace of attack in the previous two Nairobi matches was abandoned and the team settled for clever tactics enabling them to live through a torrid time brought on by a rampaging Zimbabwean offensive. The three-match-old Kenyan defence combination looked like veterans as they staved off waves of attacks from the Zimbabwe hot shots Benjamin Mwaruwari, Gilbert Mushangazhike and long range bomber Esrom Nyandoro.

These were circumstances that would have left many an old head in a daze but Kimanzi lived through it to say after the match: "We were very lucky to come off with a point but we are quite happy with that."

The Harambee Stars now have time to regroup, nurse their wounds and prepare well for remaining two matches in September - versus Namibia in Nairobi and October - away to Guinea. Victory over Nambia would qualify the Kenyans leaving them under no pressure at all in the trip to Conakry.

"We shall have a good opportunity now to listen to the coach and his assistants so that we can address any issues they have had in the recent days," said Kenya Football Federation (KFF) chairman Mohamed Hatimy. But the KFF boss will be hoping that more assistance from outside the federation, for example from the Government and the corporate world, will come through to bridge the deficit incurred by the Kenya Premier League (KPL) Limited, the company that has been underwriting all the expenses of managing the Harambee Stars.

The team was accompanied to Harare by Assistant Minister of Youth and Sport Kabando wa Kabando and the entire contingent will hope that the Minister was able to witness first hand the many hiccups faced by the team.

Kimanzi's men have demonstrated great strength of character. Sadly, this can only get them so far. Skilful players will take them further. However massive support and interest from outside the playing arena can propel them to the ultimate prize; passage to next year's second round and finally a place in the World Cup finals to be hosted by South Africa in 2010 or the Nations Cup to be hosted by Angola.

A happy Sports Minister Hellen Sambili was at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive the arriving Harambee Stars and said: "We are very proud of you. Harambee Stars coach, Francis Kimanzi has regretted striker Denis Oliech’s suspension from the next match against Namibia after his second yellow card in Harare, Zimbabwe at the weekend.

Addressing journalists at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after the team arrived on Monday, Kimanzi said: "We would have wished to have him for the next match but we still have players who can do the job against Namibia."

Stars retuned home with guarded optimism of qualifying to the next round of the 2010 World Cup/Africa Nations Cup following their 0-0 against Zimbabwe.

Kimanzi paid tribute to the Stars, but challenged the Kenya Football Federation and Kenya Premier League to keep the team together ahead of the remaining two matches in September and October.

"We will sit down with the technical bench to review the performances and plan ahead. Our defenders and most of the midfielders are based at home. Only strikers play abroad, but if we can have a proper programme of training it would benefit the team," said Kimanzi.

The team broke camp, but would reassemble next week to prepare for a friendly tie against Malawi in Lilongwe.

Harambee Stars, who are now second behind Guinea in Group 2 on goal difference, play Namibia in Nairobi on September 6 and in Conakry, Guinea, on October 10.

Kimanzi paid tribute to the Warriors, but bemoaned poor officiating, which he blamed on the loss of Oliech.

Elsewhere, Zimbabwe’s leading daily, The Herald, said their national team is in danger of failing to qualify for the second round.

In Monday’s headline titled, ‘Warriors in Trouble’, the State-owned newspaper said, the team will need to move mountains to keep alive their fading qualification hopes.

Kenya soaked enough pressure but still managed to pull off a crucial point from Zimbabwe in a World Cup qualifier after a 0-0 draw on the artificial turf of the Rufaro Stadium, Harare.

The result leaves Kenya second in Group Two level on seven points with Guinea who thrashed Namibia 4-0 in Conakry.

Praise should go to the Kenyan defence marshaled by George Owino, Edgar Ochieng and John Njoroge for denying the Warriors, who came at their opponents with everything they had.

The Warriors began strongly with Esrom Nyandoro hitting the Kenyan cross bar from a free kick at the edge of the box after Kevin Ochieng had fouled Gilbert Mushangazhike

Then Andrew Oyombe, who was off colour for a good part of the 60 minutes, won a free kick that he hit wide.

Oyombe easily lost balls in midfield starving the striking force and Osborne Monday replaced him.

Mushangazhike failed to tap home an inviting cross from Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari just on the line as the Warriors upped the tempo and it was apparent that they would score any minute.

Then Kenya had just one of their few chances in the middle of the first half when Denis Oliech picked up a loose ball in midfield but blasted wide with his markers stranded.

Oliech later earned a yellow card for protesting when he was denied a corner kick. Kenyan captain Robert Mambo had his chance five minutes to the break, but blasted wide a perfect pass from Francis Ouma.

Oliech completed the first half on a high note for Kenya with a hard shot that Energy Murambadoro punched out for a fruitless corner.

Murambadoro was later forced out with injury and was replaced by Washingtone Arubi when he could not continue in the match.

The Warriors found themselves suddenly on the receiving end of their frustrated fans, who booed them and threw objects into the pitch to protest at the lack of goals, as the second half got under way.

Noah Ayuko stopped Mwaruwari with his foot in the early exchanges of the second half and then Owino was forced to clear a dangerous ball for a fruitless corner.

Five minutes into injury time, Ayuko was forced to punch out a free kick from Cephas Chimedza in what was the last chance by the Warriors to grab all three points.

The result sparked wild celebration in the Kenyan dressing room. Assistant minister Kabando Wa Kabando joined the team as they knelt down to pray on the artificial turf clearly overjoyed by the result.

Coach Francis Kimanzi said his team deserved the point considering how tactfully they played. "I am happy with the result and the fact that we got a point. I think we deserved this result if you look at how tactfully we played," he said.

Clad in their classy grey suits provided by the government and sourced
from leading Nairobi fashion house Sir Henry's, the Harambee Stars
touched down safely in Harare ahead of their 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup
of Nations qualifier against Zimbabwe on Sunday.

The Stars' delegation led by Assistant Minister Kabando wa Kabando was
received by Kenyan High Commission staffers who led the team to the
plush Meickles Hotel in down town Harare. Team captain Robert "Boban"
Mambo and Head Coach Francis Kimanzi are confident of a good
result,adding that the support from the government has played a
significant role in their performances. Sport Minister Hellen Sambili
on Thursday donated Ksh 300,000 to be used in buying uniforms for the
team. She had earlier ordered the transfer of 'keeper Arnold Origi
from Avenue Hospital to the Nairobi Hospital where he underwent knee
surgery earlier in the week.

Mambo went on to say that Kenya will not be over confident, but would
stick to their game plan which he felt would get them a favourable
result. Zimbabwe on the other hand are confident of avenging the 2-0
loss with Head Coach Jose Vallinhos looking to the Warriors previous
home game where they Namibia 2-0 and saying Kenya would be easy to
beat.

Stars off to Harare minus Mariga

The Harambee Stars jetted out early Friday minus four of the players
who started the 2-0 win over Zimbabwe last Saturday. The quarter led
by MacDonald Mariga miss the tie either through injury or suspension.

The influential Mariga, the scorer of Kenya's opening goal last
weekend, failed to recover in time from a cut on his shin sustained
during the tie against the Warriors. First choice 'keeper Arnold Origi
is out of action for two months after undergoing knee surgery at the
Nairobi Hospital on Monday. The wily left footed Patrick Oboya misses
the tie through suspension, having picked up successive yellow cards
in the home ties against Guinea and Zimbabwe while information on
wingback Ken Ayong's exclusion was not forthcoming at the time of
going to press.

In their absence, the technical bench led by head coach Francis
Kimanzi has called up Sher Karuturi 'keeper Noah Ayuko, Gor Mahia's
utility player Andrew Oyombe Oliech and World Hope's attacking
midfielder Levi Muaka.

According to "Nation" sports writer, Charles Nyende, Kimanzi played
down Mariga's absence, saying, ""I feel safe with the replacements.
The only difference will be with the depth of substitutes otherwise
the starting line up will just be as strong."

kenya, who currently lead the group on six points are leaving nothing
to chance, they held two training sessions at the City Park Hockey
stadium to famialiarize themselves with the astro-turf as Sunday's
match at Harare's Rufaro Stadium will be played on an artificial

Jamaa, as much as we are winning games, I think we are still strides of the mark. Tuanze na Goalkeepers: Arnold, the undisputed Kenya one is so far blazing hot. The question is do we have enough capability in replacing him? Noah Ayuko is a veteran between the bars and would bet my cash on him. Jacktone is an energetic volatile keeper who I would not bet on. I think he needs a little more time before he can be trusted with the jersey one.
Our fullbacks leaves a lot to be desired! Their inability to assist in attacks and when we are in possession is just frustrating to watch. John Njoroge is excellent at the left back and needs to be allowed to move forward oftenly. Kimani in the right fullback in my view is horrible. His defending is very poor and his attacking instincts are nowhere to be seen. I think the likes of Mulinge Munandi, Ibrahim Shikanda and Edwin Mkenya should be reconsidered. Why Shikanda was dropped, while he is one of the best fullbacks we have on the land leaves a lot to be desired for the coaching staff.
The central defence of Edgar Ochieng' and George Owino is so far so good. They need more games together to cement their coordination and standing positions and movements.
The midfield, manze!! Ok, MacDonald "Mr. Parma" Mariga is wonderful. Thats the much I can say of the midfield. Titus Mulama and Robert Mambo (Vice captain and Captain Respectively) are just not even showed us why they play in the pros. They should not be even in the camp, in my view. Where are the likes of Jamal "Malo" Muhamed, Ali Breik, Emmanuel Ake and Patrick Osiako?? Oyombe was an excellent inclusion in my view. My problem is where and how they will play!
Our attacking flanks are awful. Where is our width when we are going forward? Why force Mariga, Mulama and Mambo on the flanks while we have a natural Kevin "Kegan" Ochieng' on the bench? I think Kevin ought to play more frequently in the starting line up. Oboya is doing a wonderful job at the left wing when defending and assisting the attack but who is his replacement at the left attacking?
The attacking is Oliech, who so far is showing us why he is playing at Auxere. The boy is excellent hence "Obama, Odinga, Oliech" stadium hit song. The question is who will assist him? Who is his substitute? Allan Wanga should be incorporated in the line up to pair Oliech. I beleive their blistering pace will startle any defence in the world. I think the towering Ulinzi goal keeper turned striker Ochieng' should be incorporated in the squad. His size and agility will come very handy for the long aerial balls.
The most positive thing is that our substitutes bench, for once is working and our team is scoring and winning at home.
Kimanzi, Lets organize our team for the betterment of the nation and not only focus on Mathare United, now and previous players. We have good players kwa hizo team zingine pia.
All in all, tuko pamoja na support yetu uko nayo but tumakinike technical bench.

Sher Karuturi goalkeeper Noah Ayuko has been sounded out to face Warriors of Zimbabwe on Sunday in place of injured Arnold Origi.

Ayuko’s inclusion in the squad could leave Gor Mahia’s Jactone Odhiambo and Tusker’s Joseph Ruto scraping for the other available slot.

The Sher custodian had initially been called up for the Namibia game, but was dropped after he lost his passport.

Ayuko was at the Immigration offices at Nyayo House on Monday seeking the replacement of the lost document.

Harambee Stars coaches, Francis Kimanzi, James Nandwa and Yusuf Chippo, were still working on the finer details of his inclusion by midday Monday.

SportFest understands the dreadlocked goalkeeper checked in at Harambee Stars’ Kasarani Camp last evening.

Contacted over the impending call-up, Ayuko said: "I have always been ready. I am confident that all will go on well so I can represent my country."

"I am really sorry that Origi is injured. He is such a great talent. He will bounce back, that I am sure of," Ayuko said of his counterpart.

And, Origi who cracked his patella on Saturday gave his blessings for whoever will stand between the posts at Harare’s Rufaro stadium.

"We have very able goalkeepers in this country. If it should be Jactone Odhiambo, Ayuko, Wilson Oburu, Francis Onyiso or David Okello I am confident they will do us proud in Zimbabwe, " Origi said from his Nairobi Hospital bed.

Ayuko has conceded five goals only after 12 rounds of KPL action. The other goalkeepers who were in the frame for selection were Thika United’s David Okello, Wilson Oburu (Bandari) and Francis Onyiso (Ulinzi).

Kimanzi and his coaching staff were also mulling over the midfield options after Patrick Oboya collected a second yellow card.

"We are yet to conclude on the next move, but there is no cause for alarm. We still have time and by this evening (yesterday) we shall have something to say," Kimanzi said.

Parma midfielder McDonald Mariga netted Harambee Stars’ first goal in their 2-0 over Zimbabwe but was carried off after an hour to be replaced by Kevin Ochieng.However, Wycliff Makangah, the team doctor says that it wasn't a serious injury.

MacDonald "The Don" Mariga and Dennis "The Menace" Oliech struck in each half, leading the Harambee Stars to a hard fought 2-0 over Zimbabwe's Warriors in a World Cup/African Nations Cup qualifier played at the Nyayo National Stadium yesterday. Guinea registered an away result, Pascal Feidunuo and Ishamel Bangoura striking in their 2-1 win in Windhoek that handed Kenya the Group 2 leadership with six points from three matches.

The 21 year old Mariga, who plays for Italian side Parma, blasted Kenya into the lead with a fierce shot from 25 yards that left Zimbabwe 'keeper Energy Murambadoro clutching the air. The build up to the goal was exciting. Mariga played a short corner with Sweden based midfielder Titus Mulama who threaded the ball back to Mariga who let loose with a rasping shot.

Kenya could have gone 2-0 up in the 19th minute when Oliech played a neat ball to captain Robert "Boban" Mambo who failed to connect. Czech based Patrick Oboya weaved through the Zim defense but Murambadoro blocked his shot.

The Zims gradually came back into the game with Manchester City's Benjani blasting over the bar in the 24th minute. Kenyan 'keeper Arnold Origi, son of former Kenya captain Austin "Makamu" Oduor blocked another Benjani effort a few minutes later. The Zims would continue to threaten but an inspired Kenyan defense continually frustrated their efforts.

Origi would again be a source of inspiration,snuffing out more shots from the Zims. Kenya would lose Mariga in the second half after he sustained a knock but Angola based striker Alan Wanga's inclusion soon covered for Mariga's absence and indeed Wanga went close to scoring.

Kenya came back to life and after sustained attacks, Oliech popped out of nowhere to score Kenya's second in the 88th minute.This was a classic poacher's goal,pouncing on a loose ball spilled by Murambadoro to give Kenya a 2-0 lead.

Then, the valiant Origi who plays for FK Moss of Norway sustained a nasty injury, that was later confirmed as a fracture to his knee cap. Kenya had by this time used up their subs. The 23 year old Oliech moved in to play in goal for the remaining 2 minutes as Kenya held out for a famous win.

The Kenyan team will be without sensational midfielder Patrick Oboya when they play the Zims in Harare next weekend after the 20 year old picked up his second yellow card of the campaign yesterday.

The Stars' performance has thrown the script out of the window. The build-up to the start of Africa's 2010 World Cup qualifiers was dominated by talk of how Guinea and Zimbabwe were favourites to win first round's Group Two and proceed to next year's round of five pools of five teams each. Star-studded Guinea, possessing the quality of very many European-based professionals, and Zimbabwe led by English Premiership luminary Benjamin (Benjani) Mwaruwari were expected to steamroll over, especially Namibia, and the "weakest" Group Two team, Kenya.

But what is certain is that in every match in this qualifiers, Kenyan players are literally forcing the world to pay attention. Oliech and Mariga, for instance overshadowed the Guinean stars last week and this time did the same to Zimbabweans especially the much touted Mwaruwari. Their maturity and leadership has rubbed off on the team and we can only hope that things will get better.

Kenya competitively meet Zimbabwe for the first time in a decade in a World Cup/Africa Cup of Nation, Group Two qualifier at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

The two former Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup rivals last met on December 9, 1989 in Nairobi in the regional tournament. The tie was won by Kenya 2-1.

Outside Cecafa, Harambee Stars and the Warriors have clashed twice in African Cup of Nations qualifiers in July, 1987. The two sides traded draws, 1-1 in Zimbabwe and 0-0 in the return match in Kenya.

In all, the protagonists have locked horns eight times. Kenya hold the edge with three wins to Zimbabwe’s one. Four encounters have resulted in draws.

On that basis, Kenya would naturally start as favourites but coach Francis Kimanzi has categorically refused to accept that tag. “Zimbabwe are a good team and will give us a good competition. They won last weekend (2-0 over Namibia) and will be tough to play,” Kimanzi said at a training session this week.

The Warriors lead the group with four points after their barren away draw with Guinea and 2-0 home against Namibia last Sunday. Kenya stand second with three points from their 2-0 win at home to group favourites Guinea last Saturday.

Intriguing encounter

The qualifiers at this stage are at their crucial half-way point when table standings will give a probable picture of how the groups will turn out. Both teams know a win will be vital in the race for 2010 World Cup tickets.

“Zimbabwe are targeting winning the group and they are coming into the game with their mind on a victory. We also need those three points,” Harambee Stars captain Robert Mambo said.

The stage is thus set for an intriguing encounter between two unfamiliar rivals who once used to meet as regularly as night and day. For Kenya, the man to watch is obviously Manchester City’s striker Benjani Mwaruwari.

The big striker burst to fame in January 2006 when English Premier League side Portsmouth forked out a club record £4.1 million to secure his services from French Ligue One club Auxerre.

He, however, did not live up to his billing and was later off-loaded to Man City last season.

The Zimbabweans have another striker in the name of Gilbert Mushangazhike of PSL side Orlando Pirates, who has scored two goals so far in this campaign.

The duo will spearhead the Warriors attack against a Kenyan defence that has been repeatedly questioned over its reliability. Kimanzi has, however, brushed the concerns aside saying he had no problem in that department.

“We scored two goals against Guinea and kept a clean sheet so I do not have any problem there,” he said.

A vote of confidence for the backline line of Edgar Ochieng, George Owino, John Njoroge and Anthony Kimani.

It is in midfield and attack that Kenya can boast of obvious strengths.

Parma’s Macdonald Mariga was outstanding against Guinea.

Austin Makacha should retain his holding role with Robert Mambo playing just ahead of him while Titus Mulama gets a chance to redeem himself on the left side after a poor showing last weekend.

Auxerre forward Dennis Oliech has been superb this campaign so far. A brace against the highly rated Guinea makes him the real danger man in the Kenyan attack with Patrick Oboya and Allan Wanga the supporting cast. Mambo and Kimanzi called for another massive turn out. Tickets were sold out by Friday morning translating to another intimidating atmosphere for the opposition.

Harambee Stars coach Francis Kimanzi is not changing his team as they take on Zimbabwe in a World Cup qualifier match at Nyayo National Stadium today.

Kimanzi said he was keeping faith with the same 18 players he had for selection during last weekend’s match against Guinea that Stars won 2-0.

He has also ruled out any radical changes in his starting line-up for today’s match saying it would not be wise to change a winning team.

"I am keeping the same players to be considered for selection. However, you should not expect any radical changes in the starting line-up," he told Sportfest in his last press conference before today’s match.

Stars also held their last training session Friday morning with all players involved.

"We are very lucky there are no injuries at all and we go into the match with a lot of enthusiasm and focus," the coach said.

Kimanzi while admitting that he does not know much about Zimbabwe’s Warriors said he is sure they will probably prefer to defend.

"I don’t know about our opponents but I predict their strategy will be to defend."

Kimanzi said a win for his team will help keep the group competitive and doesn’t not think playing before the home crowd will put a lot of pressure on his charges.

"The players coped with the atmosphere when we beat Guinea last weekend. I am confident of the same performance this afternoon," he said.

Later Friday afternoon, the team was given a luncheon and hair treat at the Unity School of Hair Dressing in Buru Buru.

They arrived at the school at noon where they were warmly received by students and staff before the sumptuous lunch.

After lunch, it was time to work on their hair and nails.

Paul Kanyi, a Director at Unity College said the treat was meant to show their support for the team.

Kanyi said they were happy to be associated with the team, which has done the country proud.

"We will continue to support this team to ensure that they do well in their matches," Kanyi said.

Kenya captain, Robert Mambo is calling on fans to once again turn out in large numbers to support Harambee Stars to victory in their World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations, Group Two qualifier against Zimbabwe at Nyayo Stadium Saturday.

“We are urging fans to come as they did last Saturday and boost us. They gave us morale to play. We had the power to win,” Mambo said Thursday after the regulatory team training session at the match venue.

Last Saturday, Nyayo Stadium was filled beyond its official 35,000 carrying capacity by a noisy, partisan crowd, presenting an intimidating atmosphere for the highly-rated Guineans, who went on to lose 0-2.

Harambee Stars coach, Francis Kimanzi echoed his captain’s sentiments, saying a fully-filled terrace made a lot of difference.

“When we have a good turn out from fans who come and cheer us on, it really disorients the opponents. When the team plays well, the fans encourage them. That is home advantage and we welcome it,” Kimanzi said.

A capacity crowd is once again expected at Nyayo Saturday.

Tickets, priced at Sh300, for centre stand, and Sh100 for terraces, were availed Thursday at eight outlets within Nairobi of G4S, a security firm.

Gerald Chege, an executive member of the Harambee Stars management committee, said tickets will stop being sold Friday afternoon in compliance with a Fifa security requirement that does not allow for tickets to be sold on match day.

Organisers have said 27,500 tickets were printed for the match to avoid chaotic scenes of overcrowding witnessed during the game against Guinea that forced Fifa to threaten calling of the Zimbabwe tie.

A match security official, Khalif Shabell, was subsequently appointed and promised an elaborate security arrangement will be set up to ensure adequate crowd control.

Mambo expressed confidence in Kenya maintaining their momentum as they seek to qualify for the World Cup for the first time.

“The game will be very tough, but we have to keep our composure, our concentration,” the Kenya captain said.

Recovery

Mambo, however, predicted an explosive encounter: “Zimbabwe play good football. They are targeting to win and they are coming with their mind set on victory. We need the points as much as they need them.”

The experienced Sundsvall midfielder, who trained with the team Thursday, seemed to be recovering well from a bout of flu that kept him out of practice for three days.

Team doctor, Wycliff Makanga gave the player a clean bill of health.

Also given a thumbs up by Makanga is Dennis Oliech, who has struggled to fully recover from a thigh knock he suffered from two weeks ago.

Oliech trained with a thigh support and showed little effect from the muscle injury.

Harambee Stars captain Robert Mambo and star striker Dennis Oliech resumed training for Saturday’s World Cup/Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe.

Oliech, who scored a brace against Guinea last weekend, on Monday complained of a recurring thigh pain. He suffered the injury in a collision with Namibia’s goalkeeper Attiel Mbaha a fortnight ago. Mambo was also in training after recovering from flu and fever.

Team doctor Wycliffe Makanga said the players would be available for their match against Zimbabwe. "Mambo had a serious flu and some fever, but he has recovered after medication, while Oliech’s thigh injury isn’t that serious. Everyone is happy at the camp after the two resumed training," said Makanga.

He said Oliech required ample time to rest his muscles and he would be using ice cubes on the striker’s thigh.

"The other players are in good condition apart from small knocks, which should not be a scare," Makanga said.

Meanwhile, coach Francis Kimanzi will stick with the team that beat Guinea’s Syli Stars 2-0 when they host Zimbabwe. Speaking to SportFest on Wednesday after their morning training at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Kimanzi said he was satisfied with the team’s performance.

"This is a winning team and you all saw how they played on Saturday against Guinea, why should I make changes now? I can’t say we were 100 per cent perfect during the Guinea match, but I believe all departments were impressive," said Kimanzi.

"I don’t rate my team’s performance according to departments, all I can say is that we played well, but allowed our opponents to penetrate on two occasions which should not have happened. Our performance against Guinea was better than against Namibia a week before and I believe we are getting better everyday. Zimbabwe will be in problems on Saturday," he said.

Kimanzi slightly changed the defence after losing their opening qualifier 1-2 against Namibia in Windhoek on May 31. He dropped Ibrahim Shikanda and Geoffrey Kokoyo and replaced them with George Owino and Joseph Shikokoti.

Kimanzi said Stars, who train twice a day, would hold their final training Thursday and rest on Friday.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s Parma midfielder, McDonald Mariga, praised the team’s performance against Guinea, but warned that players should not be carried away by the victory.

Mariga, a former Tusker player, said teamwork was what helped them bring down giant killers Guinea.

"We should forget about the win and focus on against Zimbabwe which could tougher. I believe we can relax and celebrate after defeating Zimbabwe because then we will be sure of six points and a reasonable position in the group," said Mariga.

Harambee Stars coach Francis Kimanzi is optimistic that his captain and midfield kingpin, Robert Mambo, will recover in time for Saturday’s African Nations Cup/World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in Nairobi.

Mambo, who plays for the Swedish side Sundsvall FC, is down with flu and is the only one out of the 25 players required in camp who was not present on Tuesday after the team resumed training at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Kimanzi pointed out that he had a talented reserve bench to call up should Mambo fail to pass the doctor’s test.

The national team faces an acid test in their quest to claim the lead in Group 2 in their next match against the Warriors of Zimbabwe.

Kimanzi said he was relieved after the 2-0 home victory against Guinea last weekend.

“We are now focused on building a winning team, we need some consistency in our performance. We have to make everyone fight for the national team jersey.

“It should be a matter of pride to represent the country and that is why I want to bring competition in all departments,” he said.

However, Kimanzi said would not call up any new players. He is satisfied with the 25 players in camp and will keep his faith in them for the remaining part of the campaign.

“But this does not in any way rule out recalling any one who improves, or a new sensation showing up. We are leaving the door open for such people, but now I need to blend the current players into a cohesive and compact side that can absorb any pressure from opponents,” he added.

Kimanzi noted that unlike their game against Guinea, where both sides opened up, Zimbabwe will hold back and try to catch the Stars on the counter-attack.

He however refused to be drawn on individual players when asked on who will be tasked on marking Manchester City hit man Benjani Mwaruwari.

“We will focus on building on the positives and not individuals. Technically, all teams are equal in this pool, but it is how fast one reads the opponent’s game that will tilt the game to either side’s favour,” said Kimanzi.

The coach added that it was important for Harambee Stars to win all their home matches and try to force a draw or a win in the remaining away matches.

“We are getting better with each game. All players are improving and if we are to get something out of this campaign, we need to have a solid defence and concede as few goals as possible.

The rest of the pieces will eventually fall in place,” he said.

Zimbabwe are due to arrive in the country on Wednesday ahead of the Saturday match. They are led by their 60-year-old coach Jose Claudinei, popularly known as Valinhos, who was appointed last year to guide the Warriors. His first major victory was against Namibia in Harare last weekend, where he secured a 2-0 win.

Denis Oliech was in sparkling form as he scored two goals for Kenya to carve out a 2-0 win over Guinea in their World Cup/Africa Nations Cup qualifier at Nyayo National Stadium.

After the 2-1 loss to Namibia in Windhoek last weekend, Stars needed to beat the Guineans, fondly called the Syli Nationale (Elephants), to put back on track their campaign in Group Two.

And it was the AJ Auxerre hitman, Oliech, who provided the perfect tonic when he raced clear of the Guinean defence to latch onto Austin Makacha’s long pass, to give Kenya a dream start after only three minutes.

Oliech, again showed his goal poaching instincts on 54 minutes when he ghosted behind Celtic defender Bobo Balde to get to Patrick Oboya’s threaded pass on the left to double Kenya’s advantage.

Then, the crossbar conspired with the Guineans to deny the Kenyan striker a hat-trick when his dipping shot on 65 minutes bounced off and out of play.

Guinea goalkeeper Kemoko Camara saved Makacha’s effort with his feet on 90th minute and soon after Kalabane stopped Allan Wanga on the edge of the box as the Petro Atletico striker burst into the box.

Guinea had threatened soon after Oliech’s opener with their star man Pascal Feindouno of French side St Etienne and Toulouse’s Fode Mansare threatening though with wayward shooting.

Dynamo Kiev’s striker Ismael Bangoura side-footed agonisingly wide his effort on 45 minutes after a one-two move involving Feindouno and Amara Bangoura sliced open the Kenyan defence.

Ismael went closer again when he smashed a perfectly placed header against the crossbar on 63 minutes from Amara’s floated cross from the left. The miss, with Harambee Stars’ goalkeeper Arnold Origi reduced to a spectator, drew a huge sigh of relief from a record over 50,000 fans who had thronged the 35,000 seater Nyayo Stadium.

But it was the Kenyans who dared the fancied Elephants with a compact display, in the end silencing the Guineans.

Guinea coach Robert Nouzaret had to withdraw Samuel Johnson on 30 minutes for Balde Algassimou and soon after Oumar Kalabane headed over on 32 minutes.

However, the efficacy of the change was to be short lived as Harambee Stars held together with midfield of AC Parma’s McDonald Mariga , Makacha and Robert Mambo neutralising Feindouno’s potency.

Coach Francis Kimanzi seeking to plug his leaky defence started with Anthony Kimani (Mathare United) on right-back, John Njoroge on the left and Edgar Ochieng and George Owino at the centre.

The shuffling worked as Bangoura and Fode were kept in check.

Kenya now face Zimbabwe next weekend at Nyayo Stadium with renewed confidence before travelling to Harare on June 21 in the marathon qualifiers.

Harambee Stars coach Francis Kimanzi has called up three players and dropped three as the team resumed training for their second 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea this weekend.

Despite saying he would not make radical changes to his system when the team arrived yesterday morning from Namibia, Kimanzi wielded the axe on the fullbacks, saying they had cost the team a point against Namibia in Windhoek last weekend.

"Namibians were very physical and had a height advantage over our defenders, that is why I have decided to bring in bulky stoppers with a focus on the Guinea and Zimbabwe matches since their players are also bulky," said Kimanzi.

Kiamnzi has recalled Tuskers Joseph Shikokoti, Sony’s Joakins Atudo and George Owino of Tanzania league giants, Simba FC and, in turn, dropped Geoffrey Kokoyo of Ulinzi, Tusker’s Ibrahim Shikanda and Kevin ‘Gaza’ Omondi.

The dropped players complained of being made scapegoats for the defeat and questioned the coach’s sincerity.

"Kennedy Ayong is a fullback and he is not bulky as the coach says," a distraught Shikanda said as he left Kasarani yesterday.

"I am gutted by the coach’s statement. He told me to go and put on more mass. It is the worst thing anybody has told me in life. I have a lot of self-belief in my abilities as a defender. I have played for Kenya in all these matches and never the issue of height has ever arisen," Shikanda said.

He added: "Nobody will put me down and I will prove wrong all those who doubt my abilities."

Ulinzi’s Geoffrey Kokoyo was shattered, saying he had been called to camp to rot then shown the door.

"I have never been given the chance to prove what I can do for this country. All I have received are call-ups and then I am dropped."

"I played the last 15 minutes against Burundi and I am proud of what I put in. I was also a second half substitute against Uganda in the quarterfinals of Cecafa Challenge Cup that is all. It kills the spirit to be dropped over frivolous reasons."

Tusker midfielder, Omondi, said he got the shock of his life.

"The coach asked me what position I play. I mean who called me to the team who does not know my position?"

Twenty five players were in camp yesterday, including Auxerre striker Dennis Oliech, who did not train as he is still nursing his thigh injury. Team doctor Wyclife Makanga, who attended on him, said he expected the striker to start running today.

Sony Sugar FC defender Jockins Atudo, who was not in the initial squad of 27 assembled last week, has been called up as Kenya gear up to take on Guinea in their second 2010 World Cup/African Nations Cup match in Nairobi on Saturday.

Coach Francis Kimanzi telephoned from Namibia on Monday requesting that Atudo and recalled Tusker defender Joseph Shikokoti report to the Harambee Stars camp at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in Nairobi where training resumes on Tuesday morning.

Kenya lost 1-2 to Namibia in the first leg of their first round qualifying tie with the southern Africa nation on Saturday. The Kenyans left Windhoek on Monday afternoon and were expecting, after a stopover in Johannesburg, South Africa, to take a night flight which would bring them to Nairobi, arriving at 5am on Tuesday.

Kenya played well going forward in Windhoek last Saturday and it was their defence and goalkeeping that appeared to have let the team down. They conceded a 19th minute goal through inept defending, levelled in the 50th minute, then their backline failed to deal with an attack that resulted in a 90th minute winner for Namibia.

The Kenyans head straight to Kasarani where Kimanzi will have four days to re-motivate his team to face Guinea this weekend. The West Africans had by Monday not indicated their arrival date to the Kenyan authorities. The Guineans were on Sunday held 0-0 at home by Zimbabwe, the other team in Group 2 of the qualifiers. This is a result that would make the Kenyans happy.

Harambee Stars travelled with 18 players to Namibia. The rest of the 27 squad members left in Nairobi were to reconnect at camp on Tuesday. Apart from Atudo and Shikokoti, Italy-based professional McDonald Mariga was also expected to join up having missed the Windhoek assignment. Mariga was on a post-season Asian tour with his relegated Serie A club, Parma.

Kenya’s Harambee Stars fell to a late goal against Namibia at the Windhoek Independence Stadium Saturday, to lose 1-2 in their opening Group Two match of the World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Kenyan defence failed to clear a cross from the dangerous Oliver Risser and Costa Khaiseb was there to slam the ball home with 90 minutes on the clock.

Risser had given the hosts an early lead 13 minutes into the match when he collected a cross the Kenyan defence could not deal with to plant the ball home.

Austine Makacha, who had a fine game, had equalised for Kenya from a header five minutes before the break.

The game looked destined for a draw with both teams having cancelled out each other but for a moment of lost concentration in the Kenya defence that gave Namibia all the three points.

Harambee Stars will be unhappy with the results having created several opportunities.

They looked the more enterprising team particularly in the first have but when they lost Dennis Oliech, through injury, midway through the second half the plot appeared to get lost.

Kenya started the game cautiously, happy to keep possession and breaking when the opportunity presented itself with Oliech particularly dangerous.

But it was Namibia who opened the scoring in the 13th munute when the Kenya defence allowed a high ball into the box.

Hannover 96 player Oliver Risser was there to punish the visitors, sweetly chesting the ball to beat Arnold Origo with a hard shot.

Kenya had no option but to push forward.

Oliech should have restored parity in the 16th minute but saw his left footed tap on from a long cross from the right agonizing close with the Namibia keeper stranded.

Namibia survived another scare when Robert Mambo headed Kevin Ochieng’s corner against the upright in the 31st minute.

In the other group fixture, Zimbabwe held hosts Guinea to a scoreless draw in Conakry on Sunday.

Kenya host Guinea in Nairobi on Saturday 7th June, a match they must win to kick start their World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations 2010 campaign.

Group B: Namibia (Brave Warriors) Vs Kenya (Harambee Stars): Independence Stadium, Windhoek, Namibia – Sarturday, 31st May 2008

Kenya and Namibia have only locked horns twice in their history – during the 1998 Burkina Faso Nations Cup qualifiers.

With German Reinhardt Fabisch at the helm of Harambee Stars, it was expected that Kenya would have an easy sailing for the 1998 Cup of Nations. Kenya had been pooled in Group 5 together with Namibia, Cameroon & Gabon.

In the first game of the qualifiers Kenya fell to a last minute goal to Namibia – an perfect own goal by wingback Francis Oduor. In the return tie here in Nairobi, the statistics showed Kenya’s 26 shots had all gone to waste with tall and bulky Namibian keeper Ronnie Kanalelo single handedly punching Kenya out of the Africa Cup diadem.

A blunder by Gor Mahia defender Oscar Kambona gifted Namibia the only shot at goal which went all the way past the then fancied Kenyan keeper Francis Onyiso. The game ended 1-0 and Kenya was out of the running.

2008 Nations Cup qualifiers

The Brave warriors, as Namibia is fondly known have a slight edge of Harambee Stars.

In the run up to the 26th Cup of Nations, Namibia topped Group 10 registering three wins in the six qualifying games to end up with 10 points. Dr. Congo, Libya and Ethiopia were the other group members and finished in that order behind Namibia. A 3-2 win away in Ethiopia won it for Namibia.

At the Cup of Nations held between Jan 20th and 10th Feb this year, Namibia failed to register any win in Group A that included hosts Ghana, Morocco and Guinea. Despite a 5-1 loss to Morocco, 1-0 loss to Ghana, Namibia ran Guinea close in the last game to register a deserved 1-1 draw.

With two goals scored, seven conceded, Namibia came off the 26th Nations Cup placed 13th in the 16 team event.

On the other hand, Kenya failed miserably in the run up to the 26th Nations Cup finishing third in Group 6 behind Angola and Eritrea. Swaziland came in last. While Namibia brushed shoulders with the high and mighty of African Soccer in Ghana's 2008 Nations Cup , Kenya only qualified for seats at home and in bars and watched the event on Pay TV.

The campaign was disastrous with Kenya losing the first two games. Three different coaches: Bernard Lama, Tom Olaba and Jacob Ghost Mulee each handled the Harambee Stars team in the first three games. Mulee went on to handle the team in the last three games. Out of the six games, there were just two wins - a 2-0 win over Swaziland in Nairobi, and a 2-1 win over Angola that came a little too late – it never mattered.

Namibia will therefore start the game on Saturday two up against Kenya. In the latest Fifa rankings (May 2008), Kenya is placed at 120 (Africa 35nd) - while Namibia is further down at 129 (Africa – 36th).

Near misses

Both Kenya and Namibia have had near misses towards their game on Saturday. Namibia’s issue though has been a grass affair, or related. Three of its stadiums that could be used to host the qualifiers were unavailable close to a month ago. The Windhoek Independence Stadium was however given a clean bill of health close to a week ago by FIFA. Up and till then Namibia was looking more likely to pull out of the qualifiers, or play home games away.

Kenya on the other hand was facing troubles of all sorts. Spoiler per see, one Sam Nyamweya took advantage of a new Minister and ran to present his faction of the Federation as legit. A court order soon was slapped on the Federation led by Hatimy that closely works with FIFA.

Until yesterday, two sets of teams and technical benches were preparing for the same tie but one group had to ‘die’ out due to lack of players. The entire core team reported at the training camp under tutelage of Coach Francis Kimanzi and a strong 18 man team is in place for the tie. Squabbles for office very nearly attracted a ban from FIFA. That it seems may have come to pass and fans can look forward to the game on Saturday.

Players

Kenya will have to do a ‘Harambee’ in midfield to fill in the unavailability of its fastest rising midfield prospect McDonald Mariga of Parma who will not make it for the tie.

On the other hand, Namibia will bravely miss the services of Collin Benjamin of German side Hamburg SV who is out of the game with a toe injury. Another midfielder Oliver Risser of German side Hannover 96 is also out with a niggling ankle injury.

Nonetheless, Namibian Coach Arie Schans and his two assistants Ronnie Kanalelo and Brian Isaacs will have no less than ten other professionals in the 18 man Namibian squad waiting to spear Kenya.

Coach Kimanzi and his assistant James Nandwa have also assembled a squad to shield the Brave Warriors with eight home based players and another ten playing afar.

Stars take on Namibia on Saturday in a World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

Gor Mahia goalkeeper Jacktone Odhiambo was the biggest surprise making the team ahead of Tusker FC custodian Joseph Ruto, who was not picked for the Namibia match.

Odhiambo was dropped in his first call-up by former Stars coach Jacob Mulee when the team played Tanzania in a CAF Africa Championships qualifier in March.

Mathare United defenders, Kennedy Ayong and Anthony Kimani are the other new call-ups in the team that travels to Windhoek.

Kimanzi also announced that Swedish top division side GIF SundSvall mid-fielder Robert Mambo has been given the captain’s band.

"We looked around and after consulting the players it was decided that Mambo commands enough respect to be the captain," said Kimanzi during a press conference to unveil his side.

Asked about Star’s chances in Namibia, Kimanzi said," As things stand now the two teams have a point each because the score is 0-0. We obviously hope to win but if the match ends like this we will be happy," he said.

Kimanzi said morale was high in camp and they have no injuries and therefore expect to play well in Windhoek.

He revealed that none of the players remaining behind have been dropped and will be part of the squad to be considered for Kenya’s next game against Zimbabwe on June 7 in Nairobi.

"No one has been dropped. Those selected today are the ones who are needed for our opening match of the qualifiers," said Kimanzi who was accompanied by his two assistants Yussuf Chipo and James Nandwa.

Team captain Mambo said they are well motivated and remain confident to do well in Namibia.

"We do not have the same problems we have experienced before. We are well motivated in and outside the pitch and hope to do well," said Mambo serving his second stint as skipper.
